REVIEW: A feast fit for dealmakers at The Bull Run

Share

Located at the base of the Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton, The Bull Run has been a staple of the Sandton dining scene since the year 2000. Opened in an era of booming markets and boundless optimism, this restaurant quickly became a favourite among business professionals looking for a prime steakhouse to seal deals and celebrate successes. Decades later, it continues to impress with its impeccable service, an expertly curated menu, and an ambiance that blends sophistication with warm hospitality.

First impressions and service

As we stepped into The Bull Run, we were welcomed with an inviting atmosphere that balanced classic steakhouse charm with modern elegance. The service was nothing short of exceptional – our waiter was not only attentive but also incredibly knowledgeable, offering detailed recommendations that enhanced our dining experience.

Starters – a promising beginning

Our culinary journey began with two exquisitely presented starters. The beef carpaccio was a masterpiece – delicately sliced fillet of beef, served with wild arugula, a rich balsamic reduction, and a vibrant tomato salsa. Each bite was a perfect harmony of flavours, with the acidity of the balsamic complementing the natural richness of the beef.

Equally impressive was the salmon tartare, which was elegantly plated and expertly cut. The combination of fresh salmon with red onion, capers, chives, Sriracha, and olive oil created a burst of flavour that was both refined and refreshing.

Drinks – a refreshing twist

We opted for two of the restaurant’s signature non-alcoholic beverages. The Shirley Temple, a delightful blend of grenadine and lime juice topped with Schweppes ginger ale, was a sweet and bubbly classic garnished with a cherry. Meanwhile, the Save the Planet was a unique and invigorating mix of Monin cucumber syrup and lemon juice, topped with Stoney ginger beer and garnished with fresh cucumber. Both drinks were perfectly balanced, offering a refreshing complement to our meal.

Mains – a culinary showstopper

For our main courses, we decided to go big – and The Bull Run did not disappoint. The Mixed Grill was a carnivore’s dream, featuring a BBQ-basted sirloin steak, boerewors, lamb cutlets, pork chops, and a whole chicken, all cooked to absolute perfection. The meats were tender, juicy, and bursting with smoky, char-grilled flavours. Served with a selection of sides, including crispy chips, creamy mashed potatoes, and a fresh side salad, this dish was indulgence at its finest.

For those who prefer a taste of the ocean, the Seafood Platter was a revelation. The combination of grilled hake, fried calamari, grilled calamari, queen prawns, and creamy mussels, all basted in a luscious butter, lemon, and garlic sauce, was a seafood lover’s paradise. Every bite was a testament to the quality and freshness of the ingredients.

Desserts – a sweet finale

No meal is complete without dessert, and The Bull Run’s sweet offerings were just as impressive as the courses that preceded them. The Baked Caramel Cheesecake was a slice of heaven – smooth, rich, and luxuriously creamy, with a drizzle of decadent salted caramel and a delightful crunch from caramel popcorn. It was pure indulgence.

The Pina Colada Panna Cotta transported us to a tropical paradise with its exotic blend of rum, coconut milk, lime, and fresh pineapples. The texture was silky smooth, and the flavours were perfectly balanced, making for a light yet satisfying end to our meal.

Final thoughts

The Bull Run has certainly lived up to its legacy as one of Sandton’s premier dining destinations. From its top-tier service to its meticulously crafted dishes, every element of our experience reflected excellence. Whether you’re a business professional looking for the perfect spot to close a deal, a steak enthusiast in search of premium cuts, or simply someone who appreciates a well-rounded dining experience, The Bull Run is a must-visit. We walked away satisfied, impressed, and already planning our next visit!
