REVIEW: A taste of New Orleans inspired by Jazz at Carnival City

Walking into New Orleans Cocktail Bar and Grill, we were instantly transported to a world where the spirit of jazz lives on. Nestled in Carnival City, this vibrant venue pays homage to the legendary artists who shaped jazz, from its New Orleans roots to the lively streets of Sophiatown in Johannesburg. With warm lighting, vintage jazz portraits, and an atmosphere buzzing with soulful melodies, the setting promised an evening of indulgence and nostalgia.

Our culinary journey began with the New Orleans Southern-grilled chicken wings, a perfect balance of smoky and spicy, complemented by a side of chilli sauce and a signature jalapeño-pesto dip. The salt and pepper calamari – lightly dusted in seasoned flour and fried to perfection – delivered on crispness and flavour, especially when paired with the refreshing lemon and herb dip.

For something lighter, the Monroe roasted butternut salad was a delightful combination of creamy feta, peppery rocket, crunchy butternut seeds, and a tangy pomegranate dressing that tied it all together beautifully.

For mains, the T-bone steak arrived grilled to our exact preference, offering a tender and juicy bite with every forkful. Equally impressive were the on-the-bone pork ribs, marinated to perfection, basted in a rich glaze, and grilled until fall-off-the-bone tender. Each dish was a celebration of bold, hearty flavours – true to the Southern spirit.

We ended on a high note with the baked cheesecake, a smooth and creamy delight that struck the perfect balance between richness and lightness.

From the food to the ambiance, New Orleans Cocktail Bar and Grill captures the essence of jazz culture in every detail. Whether you’re here for a laid-back dinner or a night of music-infused revelry, this spot is a must-visit for food lovers and jazz enthusiasts alike.
