Meraki Deli Café in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, truly puts its heart and soul into every dish, offering guests the freshest and most authentic Greek food, as well as Mediterranean deli products – all created on-site at their own bakery, restaurant, and deli. We recently stopped by and were pleasantly surprised by the vibrant atmosphere and delicious Greek cuisine. The café hosts a lively karaoke evening every Thursday, adding an extra layer of fun to the dining experience.
For starters, we indulged in a variety of dishes that showcased the freshness and authenticity of Greek flavours. The smoked Norwegian salmon and cottage cheese salad was a refreshing start, while the grilled calamari dish was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The keftedes, or meatballs, served with tzatziki and lemon, were a standout dish for us, bursting with flavours.

We were also offered a generous serving of pita bread, accompanied by an array of dips that catered to every palate. The taramosalata, made from fish roe, was rich and creamy, while the tzatziki – a blend of yogurt and cucumber – provided a cool and refreshing contrast. The hummus, made from chickpeas and tahini, was smooth and flavourful, while the tyrokafteri – a spicy cheese dip – added a delightful kick. The tapenade, made from olives, rounded out the selection with a tangy finish.

For our main courses, we opted for the Meraki beef burger and the grilled lamb chops. The burger featured a pure beef patty on a crispy bun, topped with cheddar cheese, and was a satisfying choice. The lamb chops, perfectly seasoned with classic Greek herbs and lemon, as well as tzatziki complemented the dish beautifully.

The drinks menu offered a wide variety of hot and cold beverages, including a selection of beers, ciders, cocktails, and wines, ensuring there was something for everyone. The virgin margarita was a refreshing surprise, offering a perfect blend of tangy lime and sweet notes without the alcohol. The rim, lightly salted, added a delightful contrast to the citrus flavour, making each sip a zesty delight. Equally impressive was the mimosa, which combined freshly squeezed orange juice with a sparkling non-alcoholic base, creating a bubbly and invigorating drink. Both beverages were expertly crafted, providing a delightful non-alcoholic option that didn’t compromise on taste or enjoyment.

The baklava with ice cream was a delightful conclusion to our meal. The baklava was perfectly crafted, with layers of crisp, flaky pastry enveloping a generous filling of chopped nuts and sweet spices. Each bite offered a satisfying crunch, beautifully complemented by the rich, honeyed syrup that infused the pastry. The accompanying ice cream provided a cool, creamy contrast, balancing the sweetness of the baklava and creating a harmonious blend of textures and flavours. This dessert was a true indulgence, leaving us with a lingering sense of satisfaction.

Overall, our experience at Meraki Deli Café was exceptional. The combination of delicious food, a lively atmosphere, and attentive service made for a memorable evening. We highly recommend visiting Meraki Deli Café for a taste of authentic Greek cuisine in a vibrant setting.
