Review: Flavours meet warm hospitality @Sandton Hotel

Share

Our dining experience at the @Sandton Hotel was a true delight and utterly unforgettable. The hotel is nestled on the northern edge of Sandton’s vibrant CBD, just moments away from the Sandton Gautrain Station, Benmore Shopping Centre, Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton City, and the array of corporate offices that define Johannesburg’s economic hub.

From the moment we stepped in, we were welcomed with a warm, inviting atmosphere that set the tone for the evening ahead. Executive Chef Yoshan Naidu’s philosophy of simplicity and flavour really came through in each dish, guiding us through a culinary journey that was both exciting and comforting.

The service was equally impressive, matching the quality of the food perfectly. From the instant we stepped in, we were greeted with a smile and shown to our table promptly. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that we had everything we needed while still allowing us to enjoy our meal at our own pace. Each course was delivered with a well-timed explanation of the ingredients and the thought behind it, which added a personal touch to the experience.

The wine pairings were also introduced with great knowledge and enthusiasm, helping us to truly appreciate the symbiotic relationship between the dishes and the wines. The level of service enhanced our experience, making the evening feel like a truly special occasion.

Our meal started with the duo of springbok – a perfectly balanced dish featuring tender springbok, complemented by pickled butternut, a vibrant micro salad, and a sweet tomato and chili jam. The flavours were rich and nuanced, each bite offering something new and delightful.

For the second course, we savoured the chili and garlic sea bass, which was cooked to perfection. The fish was complemented by a unique combination of broccoli, kimchi, and a fragrant coconut rice, with the lemongrass adding an aromatic touch. The pairing with Guardian Peak Sauvignon Blanc worked wonders, bringing out the subtlety of the seafood while providing a crisp contrast, freshness and zest to the richness of the dish.

For the mains, the roasted pork belly was absolutely divine – tender and bursting with flavour. It was seasoned with seven different spices, each one enhancing the complexity of the dish. The pulled beef arancini, pickled cabbage, and sesame-scented vegetables were the perfect accompaniments, balancing the richness of the pork with freshness and texture. Paired with Kleine Zalze Sauvignon, the wine provided a crisp and refreshing contrast that elevated the entire dish.

For dessert, we were treated to a citrus and dark chocolate tart, which was a delightful combination of tangy grapefruit gel, smooth lemon curd, and a decadent orange and white chocolate parfait. Each bite was a harmonious blend of sweet and tart, with the whisky sour pairing adding a pleasant depth of flavour that perfectly complemented the dessert’s complexity.

Overall, dining at @Sandton Hotel was an exceptional experience, and Chef Yoshan Naidu’s approach to food truly shines through in every dish. The careful attention to detail, the balance of flavours, and the thoughtful wine pairings made for a memorable evening that we won’t forget.
