It is no secret that eateries in the City of Gold are known for high-end interiors at – to some degree – the expense of great dishes. We had an opportunity to review Ukko restaurant and can confirm that it is different from the rest. We were taken on a culinary journey to Southern Europe, North Africa, and West Asia which we enjoyed every moment of it. The primary focus at Ukko is to bring Mediterranean and Asian cultures together. It is a tapas and sushi spot on Nicolway Shopping Centre in Bryanston with an extensive wine list and mixology bar.

Diners are guaranteed best dishes from a variety of menu including sushi rolls, crudo, ceviche, lamb riblets, baked camembert in a balsamic dressing, crispy zucchini ribbons with lemon aioli, chicken dumplings and grilled chicken wings, salmon and prawn cakes, squid heads in a wasabi aioli, crispy prawns, and large tapa plates for bigger tables to mention a few.

What impressed us the most was that the food comes out of the kitchen fast, hot, and served simply – allowing the fresh ingredients to shine. We had deliciously and spicily prepared salmon California roll that comes in eight pieces. The mouthwatering lamb riblets infused with lemon pepper crusted and salt, as well as canniboa – deep fried beef dumplings, and gyoza sauce were to die for. The calamari – grilled with olive oil, onion, and lemon butter – complemented by roasted vegetables comprising roasted and marinated beetroot, butternut, feta, crispy fried chickpeas, wild rocket, dill, olive oil, and tahina dressing were by far our star of the night. The side grilled corn and feta were also simple but delightful.

We ended the night with tantalising tiramisu which consisted of coffee liqueur, mascarpone, and savoiardi biscuits.

Ukko serves a variety of delicious alcohol-infused cocktails including ocean eyes, Glenfiddich whisky sour, rum old fashioned, raspberry mojito, vellamo, margarita, negroni sbagliato, idunn, caipirinha, tryr, and more. There is also a wonderful selection of wines and champagnes. 

The environment was excellent, and knowledgeable waiters provided us with a great service.
