Private Game Lodge in SA – the Welgevonden Experience

Share

Sub-Saharan Africa is renowned globally for its rich and diverse wildlife, and South Africa is no exception, boasting 21 national parks. While these parks are well-preserved and provide excellent opportunities for game viewing, many people choose to experience their safari at a private game lodge for several compelling reasons.

The Kruger National Park in Limpopo province for example, is one of Africa’s largest game reserves and a popular destination for tourists. However, many visitors have expressed concerns that its commercialization and overcrowded facilities detract from the overall experience.

Finding a private game lodge to suit everyone

That may sound like a tall order, but the Welgevonden Game Reserve, not far from the Kruger, offers visitors a choice of almost 30 different lodges, each with its own unique facilities and ambience. For example, the Tshwene Lodge, perched among the treetops, offers a perfect retreat for couples to enjoy a romantic weekend break. By contrast, booking the entire Morala Lodge is ideal for the exclusive use of a large party, such as a rugby or sales team.

Whichever lodge you choose, it will be tastefully furnished and have king-sized beds, aircon, and a private deck. Some will have WiFi and access to a Spa, and all offer excellent dining facilities.

Other features include:

  • A chance to meet each of Africa’s iconic Big Five
  • Game viewing in park vehicles driven by experienced guides
  • Horseback safaris and hiking trips can be arranged at selected lodges
  • Viewing ancient Koisan rock art in the nearby Waterberg mountain range
  • Exploring the African night sky with the park’s state-of-the-art astronomical telescope with the help of an experienced stargazer

The Welgevonden Game Reserve forms part of the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, a region well known for its exceptional biodiversity. Guests of the reserve will have an opportunity to view more than sixty-five mammal species, a hundred species of reptiles, frogs and fish, and around 320 bird species.
